Hosting is not a performance. The best hosts we have met are not the loudest people in the room and they are not trying to be a tour guide with better shoes.

They ask first. Two questions before the day starts, about what you actually want and what you would rather avoid, change everything. A good host builds the afternoon around the answer instead of running the same route they ran yesterday.

They know when to stop talking. There is a moment in every good experience where the host steps back and lets you look at the thing. History is useful. A monologue is not.

They are honest about their own city, including the parts that are disappointing, expensive or overrated. Trust gets built the first time a host tells you not to bother with something.

And they read the room on safety without making it a subject. Knowing which street to take at one in the morning is not a feature you advertise. It is just what someone who lives there does.
